Privacy Policy

Split Bill is built so your receipts stay yours. This page explains, in plain language, what data the app touches, where it lives, and what it never does.

The short version

  • No account. We don't ask you to sign up.
  • Receipt scans and split data stay on your device. We don't upload or sync them.
  • The camera is used only to read receipts. OCR runs on-device; images are not sent to us or any third party.
  • We don't run advertising SDKs, behavioral analytics, or tracking pixels.
  • If you purchase Premium, the App Store (Apple or Google) and our payments provider (RevenueCat) process the transaction — we never see your card details.

Who we are

"Split Bill," "we," or "us" refers to the developer of the Split Bill mobile application. If you need to reach us, email privacy@splitbill.app.

Data we process

Receipt images and scanned text

When you use the scanner, the camera captures a frame of your receipt. On-device OCR extracts line items, tax, and total. Images are processed locally and are not transmitted to our servers or any third party. The extracted text is stored on your device alongside your split.

Splits, names, and history

Any names you enter for the people you're splitting with, the items you assign, and your past splits are stored locally on your device (via the OS's secure local storage). You can clear this history at any time from the app.

Purchases

Premium is billed through Apple's App Store or Google Play. We use RevenueCat to verify entitlements and manage subscription state. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID and subscription metadata (product ID, expiration, store). We never receive your payment method.

Device and diagnostic info

If a crash occurs, the operating system may share an anonymous crash report with the app store (Apple's TestFlight/App Store Connect or Google Play Console). We use these only to find and fix bugs. You can opt out in your device settings.

Language preference

The app reads your device language via the OS so it can show the right translations. This stays on your device.

What we don't do

  • We don't sell your data. Ever.
  • We don't run advertising or cross-app tracking SDKs.
  • We don't build profiles of you, your contacts, or your spending.
  • We don't access your photo library unless you choose to import a receipt image — and even then, the image is only processed on-device.

Permissions the app asks for

  • Camera. Used only while the scanner is open, to read receipts. No recording, no background access.
  • Photo library (optional). Only if you pick an existing receipt image to scan.

You can revoke any of these at any time from your device settings. The rest of the app continues to work without them.

Data retention

Your splits stay on your device until you delete them or uninstall the app. Purchase records retained by RevenueCat and the app stores are kept per their own retention policies.

Your rights

Because your data lives on your device, you control it directly: delete individual splits, clear all history from the app, or uninstall to remove everything at once. For data held by our subprocessors (RevenueCat, Apple, Google), you can exercise access, deletion, and portability rights through their respective privacy tools, or email us and we'll help.

Children

Split Bill is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your region). We don't knowingly collect data from children.

International users

The app is available worldwide. Because data is processed on your device, it stays wherever your device is. Our subprocessors may process limited metadata (e.g., subscription state) in the United States and other countries under standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll update the effective date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continuing to use Split Bill after an update means you accept the revised policy.
